About LM Forestry

Our Chestnut wood, harvested within a 50-100 mile radius of our  base will be either made into durable highest quality products, or put into the biomass industry as genuinely sustainable resource. Young sweet chestnut wood is hard, strong and rich in tannins which make it very durable in the ground and suitable for outdoor use in general, requiring no additional preservatives. For this reason coppiced chestnut has been used and is perfect for domestic gardens, farm livestock, parks and gardens, equestrian facilities and erosion control. It will last for 15 years or more with no additional treatment required.

Coppiced chestnut provides over its 14-25 years growing period a constantly evolving biodiverse habitat. Immediately after cutting the dormant seeds among the chestnut stools will germinate producing a carpet of wild flowers and grasses providing for the insect life, reptiles and birds. As the chestnut regrows the habitat will constantly evolve allowing for shrubby cover, providing nesting and feeding opportunities. When the chestnut is larger and the ground flora begins to disappear completely the chestnut will be ready to be coppiced again, restarting the whole process.

In large areas of woodland, where areas of chestnut (cants) 2-5acres in size are coppiced on rotation, this gives a patchwork of multiple habitat types. This is why it is so important that coppice woodland is kept in working rotation, not only for the habitat but also for the high quality chestnut products that can be made from the crop.
